한국어 문법 : - 다가 / 🇰🇷 Korean Grammar: –다가
( 어떤 행위가 중단되고 다른 행위로 바뀔 때 쓰임 / Stopping one action and changing to another)
✅ Easy English Explanation
–다가 is used when:
You were doing Action A,
but you stopped and then did Action B.
So the first action does not finish. Something changes in the middle.
Think of it like:
“I was doing A, and then (something happened / I changed to B)”
–다가는 어떤 행동을 하던 중에
👉 그 행동이 끝나지 않고 멈춘 뒤
👉 다른 행동이나 사건이 이어질 때 사용해요.
보통 갑작스러운 일, 예상 못 한 상황, 또는 중간에 바뀐 상황을 말할 때 많이 써요.

🔹 Basic Structure
Verb stem + 다가 + new action
🌟 Example 1
공부하다가 잠들었어요.
I was studying, and then I fell asleep.
👉 I didn’t finish studying. Sleep happened in the middle.
🌟 Example 2
밥을 먹다가 전화를 받았어요.
I was eating, and then I answered a phone call.
👉 Eating stopped because the phone rang.
🌟 Example 3
운동하다가 다쳤어요.
I was exercising, and then I got hurt.
👉 The injury happened during exercise.
🌟 Example 4
영화를 보다가 울었어요.
I was watching a movie, and then I cried.
👉 Crying happened while watching.
🚨 Important Feeling of –다가
It often shows:
- An unexpected event
- A sudden change
- Something that happens in the middle of another action
❌ Not used for finished actions
If Action A is completely finished, we don’t use –다가.
Wrong idea:
“I ate and then I slept.” (Both actions finished normally)
That situation uses –고, NOT –다가.
🔁 Quick Comparison
| Korean | Meaning | Feeling |
| –고 | And then (normal order) | Action 1 finishes |
| –다가 | While doing, then… | Action 1 stops in the middle |
밥을 먹고 잤어요 = I ate and then slept (normal sequence)
밥을 먹다가 잤어요 = I was eating and fell asleep (sleep happened during eating)
