(Doing something for someone / Asking someone to do something for you)

–아/어 주다 is used when an action is done for another person.

It shows:

“I do this for you”
or
“Please do this for me”

So the action is not just for yourself, but to help someone.

 

–아/어 주다는
👉 다른 사람을 위해 행동해 줄 때
👉 다른 사람에게 부탁할 때 쓰는 표현이에요.

도와주는 느낌, 부탁하는 느낌이 들어가서 일상 회화에서 아주 많이 사용돼요.

 

🔹 Basic Structure

Verb stem + 아/어 주다

열다-열어요 (open)	열어 주세요	Please open (it) for me

 

Situation 1: Doing something for someone

Example 1

친구가 숙제를 도와줬어요.
My friend helped me with my homework. 👉 The friend did the action for me.

 

Example 2

엄마가 문을 열어줬어요.
My mom opened the door for me. 👉 She did it to help someone else.

Example 3

제가 사진을 찍어 줄게요.
I will take a picture for you. 👉 I’m doing this action for another person.

 

Situation 2: Asking someone to do something for you

This is VERY common in daily Korean.

Example 4

이거 좀 도와주세요. Please help me with this.

 

Example 5

사진 좀 찍어 주세요. Please take a picture (for me).

 

Example 6

문 좀 닫아 주세요. Please close the door (for me).

 

💡 Important Feeling of –아/어 주다

It adds the feeling of:

• Kindness 💛
• Help 🤝
• Doing a favor 🎁

Without 주다, it can sound more like a simple action, not a favor.

문 닫아 주세요 = Please close the door (for me) vs 문 닫으세요 = Close the door (command)
